Comparison of Two Films Essay In that paper, I will try to compare two films which are A Birth of a Nation directed by D.W.Griffith and The Bicycle Thieves directed by De Sica. After giving the story of the films, I will try to explaintheir technical features and their similarities. A Birth of a Nation by D. W. GriffithGriffith can be seen as the first modern director, his greatest achievements being the historical epics The Birth Of A Nation.When it was released, it was one of the longest films ever made, over three hours in length. The prologue depicts the introduction of slavery to America in the seventeenth century and the beginnings of the abolitionist movement. The major part of the film depicts the events before, during and after the Civil War. It focuses on the exploitation of the newly-freed Negroes and the rise of the Ku Klux Klan in the south. Griffith shows itas a drama, a romance, and a documentary, with the vivid period reconstruction outweighing the personal stories. The title of the film is an int eresting one. It is unknown whether the title refers to the birth of the reunited states, or the birth of the Ku Klux Klan. I tend to think that the film has a double meaning. In showing the Ku Klux Klan as good guys, it is obvious that Griffith was trying to show their birth as a positive event for the United States. Also, he was showing that the U.S. was once again reunited after the war, leading to the strengthening of the nation. It forebodes the future, when the South and the blacks living there are kept in check by the Ku Klux Klan , making the U.S. that much greater. Though it would be better to ignore this notion of the birth of the Ku Klux Klan, it cannot be due to the films content, although the film does show a truly united states. The film is an incredible piece of propaganda for both the Ku Klux Klan and the Jim Crow system. The Jim Crow system was undergirded by the following beliefs or rationalizations: Whites were superior to Blacks in all important ways, including but not limited to intelligence, morality, and civilized behavior; sexual relations between Blacks and Whites would produce a mongrel race which would destroy America; treating Blacks as equals would encourage interracial sexual unions; any activity which suggested social equality encouraged interracial sexual relations; if necessary, violence must be used to keep Blacks at the bottom of the racial hierarchy People who knew nothing about the KU KLUX KLAN or thought of them as white villains before Birth of a Nation probably changed their minds and donned hoods of their own upon seeing the film. The mainstream picture was probably the best advertisement that the KU KLUX KLAN could have had. The vilifying of blacks also led to the Jim Crow system. When it was portrayed in this movie as acceptable, people in the South felt much better about doing horrible deeds to black citizens, denying blacks their civil rightsThough the portrayal of both blacks and the KU KLUX KLAN were extremely off track, the movie itself was an amazing work of cinema for its time. This was probably the first movie to use hundreds of extra in a battle scene. These scenes were well crafted by the filmmaker, and while not to the perfection of more modern films such as Braveheart, the technology and genius that the filmmaker used rival such films. To think that the movie was released only fifty years after the end of the Civil War makes the feat seem even more incredible. In seeing the huge battles, I did not need sound to hear the sounds of battle in my imagination. It would have been incredible if the movie had been made in the era where sound came into movies. Griffith deployed all the technical experiments of his previous movies for maximum visceral eff ect, along with a prepared score mixing classical music and folk tunes. With expressive close-ups, including cross-cutting, multiple camera positions, inter-titles long shots, irises and superimposition, Griffith communicated not only the monumental scale of Civil War battles but also the intimate psychology of his central characters. A child comes up to him wanting to be picked up, he picks the child up and a staff member tells the student to put the child down or he might drop the child, the stu dent questions himself on what he did wrong and feels frustrated. The next day the child asks to be picked up again by the student, but the student has learned from his mistake that he cannot pick the child up so he says no to the child.Another theoretical example of a student who was interacting with a child, a nursery nurse asked that student to set out the beds but the student did not listen to the nursery nurse. The student continued to interact with the child and when the nursery nurse came to check how the student was doing, she saw that the beds were not put out and the student was slouching on a chair, the nursery nurse was not pleased that the student had not listened.The student was annoyed that she did not listen and apologised to the nursery nurse the next day in the setting. The reflective cycle lets you look at different situations that you may have been in the setting, ask someone to comment or give you ideas on how to improve on the outcome next time you encounter th e situation again, for example talking to your supervisor or another staff member can provide feedback and support.The reflective cycle lets a person look at what they did in that situation they were in and what action plan is going to be needed next time, sometimes you are going to encounter problems that are going to be hard to figure out but these problems must not stop progression to achievement or else you are going to feel like you are underachieving and not going to be successful. P et al, 2007), for example a student wanted to plan an activity for the children and this activity was going to be understanding and earning how to count numbers and the next day the activity was carried out by the student with the children but the activity did not go so well and the student felt like she was under achieving and was questioning herself on what went wrong but she remembered the reflective cycle that was mentioned in college and she used the reflective cycle to discover wha t the problem was and this problem was resolved and the activity was carried out again and it was successful.One strategy to use when improving your own performance is listening to the opinions of the other people in the setting about your practice, this is a learning strategy because the feedback can be used to consider the ways of improving your own performance and what areas of development you need to improve on. (Tassoni.P et al, 2007), A theoretical example of a supervisor telling a student they needed to improve on their communication skills to become more confident, the supervisor could suggest different solutions to the area that needs developing, the supervisor could support the student when planning a task that could lead towards developing their communication skills. Another strategy to use when improving your own performance is setting SMART (Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Realistic and Timescale) targets for yourself, and make sure these targets are specific because you need to know what you want to achieve.The targets need to be measurable because you will need to know when you have been successful in a task, the tasks need to be achievable so you can complete the tasks and aim towards the goal you have set, the tasks need to be realistic so you can set yourself a task that can be done in a reasonable time and know the timescale of how long each task is going to take or otherwise you are going to struggle to meet the tasks if you do not know how long you are going to take with each task. P et al, 2007), for example if someone wanted to become a teacher, they would need to get training and experience to get towards that goal.The person would have to plan out in stages of what they were going to achieve, when and how they were going to achieve the task and by the person setting tasks for himself he is motivating himself towards an aim that he wants to achieve to become successful. Another example of a student who wanted to create a fol der for their observations, they would need to collect all of their observations they had made on the children. Already in today’s era 800 million people are unnourished, in India only 30 million people suffer hunger,46% children are underweight and 17000 people are dying per day due to hunger on an average. Thus in near future we are going to face a great threat not only of climate change but also of food security†¦. However, Not all effects of climate change on agriculture are expected to be negative, most of the major food crops are C-3 plants including staple food like rice ,wheat, oat, barley will show increase in yield ranging from 25% to 64% due to increased CO2 level, also most of the noxious weed are C4 plants and their growth will be checked. But this is only one side of the coin ,increased temperature due to increase in CO2 level may rise the pest attack up to 25% and fungal disease attack up to 20% and also disturb our monsoon pattern.In an overview it can be said that it will create more and new problem rather than benefits because the worst sufferers would be farmers of Rainfed agriculture which cover 60% of all cultivable lands. Today humanbeings have become dependent on technologies which are dependent on non -renewable resources and produce illeffects in long run.nowdays we say that glaciers are shrinking;may be shrinking but more that the heart of the people and their philosophy is shrinking too.while the drastic effects of global warming has been discussed in many scientific circles,had their run on T.V. and even had well meaning Hollywood films but the need of the hour is to change ourselves,to reduce our luxurious wants. The need of the hour is to develop a) True sustainability,there should be synergies between climate mitigation strategies and development policies in areas of energy efficiency,fuel substitution,renewable ,afforestration,and land and waste management. b) The planning should not be for temporary economic gains and support,but for sustainability in future as well.There should be partnerships with communities,individuals,and private sector to frame effective measures to reduce the impact the effect of climate change. Today we all peoples of the world need to change our habbits ,not only in Agricultural practices but also in our daily life practicices†¦ Switching of fans and light before leaving room ,efficient use of water at home , proper garbage disposal at micro level, though seems to be a very minute step but the huge building of true sustainability will only form above these basic steps because this will be the 1st step against our greed, so step ahead and realize your own responsibility ,because it is not the time to curse the darkness but to light a small lamp.
